Cupcakes at Cake Couture
The first time I had Red Velvet was a cupcake from Cake Couture. It was pretty cream cheese frosting piped on an arrestingly red cupcake. It was wonderful. It was bliss. It was irresistible: I started off with half of one, but I think I ended up eating two. (Which was really bad because I was at a potluck and I made an absolutely uninhibited pig out of myself!) I had no idea what I was tasting except pure yumminess. After searching for recipes to try to make it at home, I have learned that Red Velvet has cocoa, buttermilk, butter and vinegar in it. And lots and lots of red food coloring.
Cake Couture's cupcakes are not cheap ($2.50-$3.50 per cupcake), but they are very good. Their Red Velvet is so good, I use it as a standard to judge other Red Velvets by. Their cupcakes, in general, are so good, my husband is trained to get them for me on special occasions like Valentine's Day, my birthday, and when I give birth to his children. Yep, forget taking me to John Dominis, just make the drive out to Aina Haina and get me my cupcakes. Or sleep on the couch.
Unfortunately, my birthday fell on a Tuesday and Red Velvet is not made on Tuesday. (There's a link to their website below so you can see what's on the menu on what day.) So, without further ado, I bring you Haupia and Chai Spice.
Haupia's the one with the coconut flakes. It had haupia creme inside. I love Chai and started into the cupcake before I remembered to take a picture.
You have to go early to make sure you get a cupcake before they sell out for the day. So, sadly, my hubby had the cupcakes baking in his car all day and they were kinda stale before they got to me at the end of the day. Every other time I've had Cake Couture cupcakes, they've been fresh and delicious, though, so I think it was our bad, not theirs, that these weren't moist and bursting with flavor.
If you're out at Chuck E. Cheese's in Aina Haina or if you're on your way to my house, do yourself (and me) a favor and pick up some cupcakes. You won't regret it.
